Despite some really windy weather we had great fishing.  We had better luck with the Blues than the Striped Bass(Rockfish) although we saw a slight improvement on the size of the Rock.  As the temperature cools we will see the Blues start to taper off and the Rockfish pick up.   We saw a lot of breaking Blues and we chummed with light tackle so everyone could enjoy the fiesty fight of the Blues.  Thanks to all who fished on the Bay Quest this past week.  Hope to see you all again.

Cooler Temps — Hotter Fishing!

You couldn’t ask for any better weather or fishing.  Fall  is my favorite time of year and I enjoy hearing the geese honking as they fly over while I’m working on the water.  This past week we caught bluefish, red drum, rockfish & spot.  I also had a couple of chartered dinner cruises in the evenings  where we watched the sun set and the full moon rise.  We had lots of fun and I thank everyone for coming down.  I have plenty of fall/winter days still available so get a group together & give me a call.  Capt. Dave

Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School Floating Classroom

During the last two weeks the Bay Quest has been the floating classroom for the Environmental Science students from the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School.  The school is comprised of gifted and talented high school students from all of the surrounding counties who are primarily studying advanced math and science.  We took biological collections for educational purposes using a small otter trawl, shaft tongs, crab pot, and plankton nets.  They explored the role of the oyster in the Bay and its value as a filter for the water column and as a source of habitat for other organisms.  The life of the blue crab is highlighted followed by lab work collecting water quality data such as ph, salinity, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen.  We pulled an otter trawl and caught a variety of fish.  We ended each day having a lot of fun rod and reel fishing.  It’s a wonderful experience for the students and I feel privileged to participate in their learning process.

Chumming at the Target Ship.

This has been a rainy, windy week for fishing.  I did get out this weekend and we went Red Drum fishing across the bay.  I could find the slicks created by the Drum and tracked them as they fed up the bay but could not get one to bite.  We did catch Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish trolling.  We also tried chumming at the target ship and caught Bluefish and released undersized Sea Bass.  I enjoyed meeting a new customer, Lennie Ellis and friends.  Thanks for fishing with me and wish we could have hooked up those big Red Drum.  Hope to see you when the big Stripers arrive.

Light Tackle Fishing

August ending with the best fishing.

Fishing has gotten better even though I didn’t think it could.  We started catching more keeper Stripers(rockfish) this week in addition to Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, Spot and Croaker.  We had a great weekend despite the threat of tropical storm Danny as you can see in the photos below and I really appreciate everyone who came this week.

Calm Seas & Good Fishing

Hurricane Bill was thankfully  going to have no effect on us up here on the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay but it was hard to convince my parties the last couple of days to come.  Two weekend charters cancelled thanks to the Weather Channel.  It was slick calm both days and the captains that fished had wonderful catches.  Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel & all kinds of bottomfish were caught.

I want to say “Thank You” to my summer mate, Jordon Strickler, who is returning to college.  He will be a sophomore at Ferrum and I know he will do well again this year.

I enjoyed having a long time customer, Cornell Walker and his family and friends fish with me this past week.  Here’s photos of Cornell’s grandson. We caught blues, mackerel, and spot.

Blues, Drum, Rockfish & Croaker

Fishing still remains good.  We’re catching Bluefish, Mackerel, Red Drum, Croaker and even had a couple keeper Rockfish.  I’ve chummed, trolled and bottomfished.  Many thanks to a lot of good people who fished with me and hope to see you again soon.  I have lots of available days and the fishing is good so get a group together and come on down.  Dave
